Hang with ME on a desert island & WIN!

01 April 2012 | By tri-cities in blog | 8 Comments

Why would you choose me to be trapped with on a dessert island?

Coquitlam Mommy thinks her mommy prep skills are better than mine (Ha, I know… come on!) Let us know who would would rather be stuck with on a dessert island and you can win a sexy diaper bag from Pinky and Company for your efforts.

A winner will be randomly drawn from the comments of each post (momcafe Tricities & Coquitlam Mommy) on April 30th, 2012. Please visit and LIKE for more entries!

I probably don’t need to sell you much… you already know I am cool, competent and have, so far, kept three kids out of the emergency room!  But, here are some ideas why I am better to hang with away from civilization!

Not only will I keep you well fed, clean and tidy and probably having the time of your life, my life experiences have already prepared me for the most un-imaginable situations… I have actually had a baby “fill “a car seat with diarrhea…. over the straps and all… and I maintained my cool composure.

I have dealt with bee stings, burns, open wounds and vomit in extraordinary quantities. I am a recovering hippy mom from my days spent “on the Drive ” in Vancouver, a mom-of-all trades who understands the importance of cupcakes at school on your birthday and making sure “THE SHIRT ” is clean for school!

My kids are a few years into life, but I still do drag around a bag filled with our worldly possessions to get us through the day. Not only am I more experienced at packing for the day with kids (my eldest is 8.. that means I have 8 yrs of experience… 6 more that my competition Coquitlam Mommy) but I have experienced a whole array of situations with my 3 monsters and am prepared for the emergencies that always pop up.  I know exactly the position to hold a toddler so she can pee in the woods (there is a trick to keeping your shoes dry) I can entertain a car-full of children with a blue pen and a pack of sticky notes, I can build an emergency diaper from a variety of miscellaneous items (tee-shirt, maxi pad and duct tape…. Seriously!)

The biggest thing for me these days, working from home with kids aged 2-8, is that whatever I am using to haul my gear around doesn’t look like a diaper bag. I am past the stage of embracing the fact that I have a lovely baby and want functionality and style more than anything.  I don’t really want to look like a mom now… I want to look cool, and like I have it “all together”

When I entered the world of diaper bags they were navy or pink, and patterned with cute teddybears, or delicate Asian fabrics.  Perusing the options now…. I drool over the possibilities.

Looks don’t always matter, sometimes it is more about what is on the inside. These bags deliver that as well.  As I (not so gently) stuff my super cool Skip-Hop Bento bag full of my daily crap…. With the remnants of last week’s crap still coating the bottom!

So what is in this sexy bag?   I`d like to tell you that it is full of first aid supplies and kids toys for entertaining… education books and games,  healthy home made snacks and useful “mommy helper” products…. but it isn`t!

It is comprised of mostly food!

Seriously… with three kids, all in in various stages of starvation, food is our number one priority! Even over diapers! You can be creative with a “code brown” after 8 years of practice … but god help us if we are out of granola bars or fruit snacks!

And, little trick here;  I stuff pockets full of chocolate coins for those “work call” emergencies! The greatest thing about chocolate coins is the tricky nature of the “unwrap”  which gives me a few extra precious seconds of quiet while immature brains figure out the physics of metal wrapped candy!

Necessary life requirements like my iPhone, wallet and lip balm…. Without these, life would not go on.  Various coins are jangling around the bottom (great when the 2yr old is treasure hunting in the bag… which is another way to get 5 quiet minutes when on a work call)

Water bottle – after 7 granola bars little mouths get dry… preferably 3 water bottles…. Even if they are small, because sibling cooties do exist!

If you search a little deeper (careful of your fingers… it is now getting a little creepy in there) you will find various school papers (probably that needed to be signed, whoops) that pap smear request from the doctor’s office (If I ignore it long enough, will they just forget?) and a school of fishy crackers in various stages of decomposition (but still edible to a 2 yr old! Yum)

Advil will be there, (both the adult and the kid type… for emergencies only of course!) Tampons, and usually a spare pair of baby socks (probably too small, but oh well, they soak up the leaking water bottles).

Our diaper and wipes (when remembered) are toted around in a reusable lunch bag, or wet bag… so much better than having them roam freely and be coated with fishy cracker bits (ouch on little tushies!).

All in all, my world, and my kids world!

I tend to restock once a week, stuffing handfuls of pre-packaged snacks (often just emptying the box) although if hubby takes the bag out for the day, our snack supply diminishes a little quicker.

So, will you hang with me and my diaper bag?

We have tunes, food, drugs…. What more do we need?    Leave a note below to win my diaper bag (minus all the crap inside, you can provide your own crap!).  Not only is my bag sexier, but you will make me feel good by commenting! For an added entry, be sure to like page and let us know you did!   Say hello to them for me!

And whatever you do, don’t check out my competitions post….

Signed up for Pinky & Co (and said hi) on Facebook. Love your article too! I’m a backpack girl myself, but the top is now almost all toddler stuff, extra diapers, snacks, a small roll of TP just in case. My toddler also likes to bring her backpack or purse, and it usually has books and toys and sometimes a change of clothes, even if it’s just for a short walk. She packs it herself though and is so proud, it doesn’t matter to me.

Wipes coated with cracker crumbs? ;) that’s awesome! :)
I wish I could write like you. We all have different talents I guess.
I am not in the cool moon club yet, another year or two, maybe. Small children required a ton of food and it will be very helpful and nice to have a new and cool bag, ours is not as clean and fancy anymore.
I enjoyed your post, keep up the good work, looking forward to the next post!
I liked the Pinky and Co.

I’d say your bag. Function is preferred to fashion for me.
