Looking for ways to get noticed online? With 2 billion web sites out there, it’s not enough to do what everyone else is doing. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Be Bold

Feel that little twist of tension in your stomach? Then you’re on the right track. Doing something that makes you feel a bit scared means that you’re onto something – innovation! So feel that fear and do it anyway.

Be Real

Fear aside, be sure to stay true to who you are and do what comes naturally to you. Stop trying to be someone you’re not; people respond better when you’re portraying your authentic self. The beauty of the Internet is that it’s grassroots: the content is made by regular people. People connect with real people.

Be Messy

Leave the professional production to the big guys. It’s perfectly fine if you don’t know where to put your commas or if the lighting in your videos are off. Not only do people expect online content to be somewhat amateur in nature, chances are that your audience won’t even notice.

Be Fired-up

Got a tight deadline? Passionate about something? Strike when the iron is hot. Having a bit of fire in your belly about a particular idea is the best time to create online content. Not only will it flow better, but you’ll increase you’re odds of having something that will gain attention online.

Be Different

Don’t do what everyone else is doing. If you have an idea that’s just a bit crazy, then you’re onto something fabulous. As Heather White of 2020 Communications says: don’t be one of a million, be one in a million. People have seen everything online. Aim for unique and you stand a better chance on getting noticed online.

Be Entertaining

Focus on being interesting. You want people to not only keep coming to your site, but to subscribe and visit again and again. People don’t subscribe to the bland and boring. Use humour, communicate a point of view, use photos – anything that will help your audience keep interested and engaged.

Be Prepared

Sometimes it’s not enough to have the faith; you need the actual skills, mentoring and advice. So learn how to shoot online video. Find someone who can give you the details on creating a podcast. Download that ebook. Surround yourself with people who can help you.

Be Action-Oriented

Get things done rather than worry about the little details, which tend to smother flow and creativity. Action is particularly important when you’re trying to get an idea off the ground. As the famous quote from Patton goes: A good plan implemented today is better than a perfect plan implemented tomorrow.

Whatever you decide to do online, just do it. Enough with keeping posts in your Drafts folder. Stop waiting for the perfect written blog post or best idea for your next video. One thing I do know: not doing anything is a surefire way not to be noticed online.
