In my previous life, you know, the one where I still had a waist and my biggest concern involved choosing between Japanese and Thai for dinner, I had a great work wardrobe. It really was. Actually, it still is, I just can’t fit into it anymore (but that’s a story for another time).
I loved my work wardrobe. Picking out my ensemble for the day made me look forward to what laid ahead. A certain look for meetings with clients (maybe a pencil skirt with high boots and a blouse). A different outfit for the sales end of things (a nice pair of trousers, heels and a fitted blazer). In the office all day, maybe I’d go a little more casual (comfy cashmere sweater with dressy denim and ankle boots). What I wore helped me feel confident and capable.
Since becoming a working Mom to three little beings, things have changed a bit. Okay, a lot. Not that I am no longer confident or capable. I am, however my clothing may not always scream ‘well put together woman’. Gone are the days of choosing different ensembles for client meetings or sales calls. A somewhat new criteria has formed regarding my professional wardrobe. And it goes something like this:
Does it fit?
Is there any spit up on the shoulder?
Are there Cheerios stuck to my butt?
Do these shoes have comfort soles?
Can you see my back fat in this shirt?
Is this clean?
Does this look too wrinkly?
If the piece of clothing in question passes just three of these seven questions, then it will most likely be worn for the day.
I miss my old wardrobe. And my delusional self keeps it hanging in the closet with the hope that my thrice child bearing body will eventually fit back into my non child bearing body clothes. But until that miracle happens, I make do. And mostly because the cost of raising three kids trumps that super awesome new pair of Theory black pants.
