Wanna know what I learned last week? I learned that the male lion spends twenty-two hours a day sleeping. What does he do for the two hours a day he is awake you ask? He eats.
Wanna know what the female lion does twenty-two hours a day? She collects and prepares the food, rears the cubs, and cleans the den. She also keeps her eye on the pride and staves off possible predators, keeping her and hers safe.
Wanna know what I do twenty-two hours a day? See above female lion description.
I’m not here to do any Daddy bashing. God knows that Dirty Daddy is an engaged and active father. He isn’t afraid to change a diaper, give the kids a bath or pick up a vacuum. But I still do the lion’s share of the work.
While we both work full time, it does appear that my other ‘full time’ job is my family (and I’m not even including running my own business here – Dirty Mommy is truly up twenty-two hours a day!). Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I LOVE my family and I LOVE taking care of them. But sometimes I’m tired. And sometimes, just sometimes, I would love to see someone else take the lead for a bit.
I am my own worst enemy in asking for regular ‘me’ time. I just have so much to do each and every day that I can’t seem to fit it in. I know, I know. That’s hardly an excuse, but it is my reality. I know I’m not the only Mommy out there with this problem. And heaven knows there are busier Mommas out there. But the precarious balance of work, home and me is one that appears unreachable for me at this point in time.
Every Momma out there is a working Momma. No doubt about it. And for the Momma’s working outside of the home, how do you find the time to fit it all in? Or do you? Maybe you’re struggling with it all as much as me? And is this ‘working full time parent thing’ really having it all?
My guess is the wild and the suburbs aren’t all that different after all.
A married and messy Mom of three children three years old and under and Stepmom to a beautiful and fabulous teenager, Stephanie Choquette of Waterloo, Ontario co-owns (with her Mom!) an online e-tail store full of sassy stuff for spunky kids (www.thespottedmonkey.com) and has a dedicated following on her wildly popular blog called The Dirty Mommy Club (www.dirtymommyclub.com). She is currently on maternity leave from her corporate career.
I love it! We are ALL working mamas and we do SO much for everyone else. Nurturing instincts or not we spend a lot of time in this role and rarely turn the nurturing on ourselves. I guess in terms of working and family and having it all…for me it comes down to my perspective of things and letting go of being “the” perfect mother, housekeeper, lover, etc and being happy with what is in my life…even when the kitchen is a disaster
