A Latte Perspective

Yes, I am addicted. I indulge in my tall one-pump mocha, one-pump sugar free vanilla extra hot latte, well okay, once a day! Some days the great folks at the ‘bucks just don’t get it right. And for me to ENJOY my latte it must be PERFECT. In fact, in some weird way my daily latte has become almost ritualistic. Bad latte SEEMS to equal bad day.

This is a great example of the POWER OF PERCEPTION.

How many times have you been working so hard to eat super healthy, only to be faced with a piece of cake, in a social setting, that would be rude to refuse? The donut that speaks to you through your office wall all the way from the staff room? The kid’s leftover morsels left so lonely on their abandoned plates?

So you give in….you throw your hat in the ring and waive the white flag…BUT not just for that moment–for the rest of the day! For some, a simple indulgence can lead to a dam breaking philosophy that the day is ruined so might as well end it with a dietary “bang”! Ever messed up your exercise routine and called it quits again until Monday? We all have!

I call this type of thinking–the deferred payment philosophy.

The true currency of spiritual and physical well-being is the amount which we PAY ATTENTION to our health. How much we embrace and enjoy nutrition and exercising our minds and bodies. We are in debt to our bodies. We OWE ourselves time, attention and care. A small indulgence is a slight blip in our payment plans of well-being. But a day, a week, a month and more really impacts our credit! Just like in real finances, if we constantly defer payments we will never really get ahead. This is true our own health.
The best way to fight back from deferred payments is to change our perceptions. A donut does not equal a whole day of non-nutritional greatness. A missed cardio class does not equal giving up for a week. EXPECT that indulgences will come, exercise commitments will be missed, dishes may not get done, and countless other unexpected “things” will happen. Transform how you perceive these hiccups in our plans and you will change your response to them.

Remember that our lives are made up of small choices we make every hour of every day. Take your health, well being (and overall sense of sanity!) one choice at a time.

We are not perfect–either are lattes. Bad latte? GREAT DAY–my new perception!
