Earlier this month I was invited by momcafé to their first networking event in Toronto. Vancouver born, the organization has been running meetings and seminars to connect and inspire moms since September 2007.
Their touch down in Toronto is great news for moms (despite the name, dads are welcome too!) here looking for the inspiration and tools to find a career, launch a business venture or get involved in their communities. Onsite childcare by Kids & Company is also a huge draw, and judging by the turnout on October 2, the crowd thought so, too.
Helping myself to a tea and light breakfast — always offered at these morning events — I cruised the room. Moms in jeans. Moms in suits. Moms with babies. Moms solo. All here to learn from one another.
One of the speakers this day was Caroline Connell, busy editor-in-chief of Today’s Parent and my colleague. Her informal chat travelled her career path and how she juggles it with motherhood. Questions followed, allowing the women to probe a little deeper for words of wisdom and practical advice. Then for those who didn’t have to run out with a fussy child, some round-up time to gather and reflect.
Karen Connor was one of these moms. Striking up a conversation with her, I learned she’s a graphic designer from Burlington who currently works for a small company but wants to expand her freelance business. Then I chatted to Emma Waverman, a fellow writer and mom from my hood. A diverse group with a common goal: to make work work for them, not the other way around. And to most that means pursuing a passion that fits in with their parenting styles.
