The power of magic *

17 April 2012 | By tri-cities in blog | 4 Comments

This weekend we walked through our garden, giving the tulips some love and encouragement. Next weekend, (hopefully when they have opened) we will stop by to check and see if the fairies have arrived: because everyone knows fairies live in tulips!

Right?

They also live in the forest behind our house …which is why we frequently go back there and build extravagant fairy houses.

We may have failed miserably in raising our kids to be spiritual, in the standard way.. (Proven to us dramatically when our 6 year old asked us what a church was when we were in England this year.. one of those, oh crap moments in parenting!)  but we have raised our kids to believe in spirits, and sprites, and fairies and magic, and everything that comes along with that!

In the same breathe; we talk about heaven, and horoscopes, how the world is our oyster, and how our opportunities are limitless!

We talk about all the choices in beliefs (because we believe in choices!) and answer questions about where the world came from with a variety of suggestions… and then we let them decide what feels right.

We may be raising our kids without one defined higher power… and according to many this may leave them rudderless and without direction and purpose in the future. My hope is that by having an open mind to all the options of beliefs, and removing the limitations to what is possible, we may create something amazing in our children.

So we teach our children to believe in magic… and whether we were created by the miracle of one higher power or the miracle of millions of years of organisms developing into a human being… it is all pretty magical to me!

So, call your psychic, speak to your god, or join me Thursday April 26th at the Inlet Theater in Port Moody to experience the Sensation of Magic!

Tickets are also available for a Friday showing at the Inlet Theatre, or May 18-19 at the Presentation House in North Vancouver!

Comment or leave your name below by April 22nd, to win a pair of tickets to the Port Moody Showing!   Do you believe in Magic?

  1. I definitely believe in magic. We too are raising our girls outside of mainstream religions – let them decide for themselves. They are smarter and more intuitive than we give them credit for.

I believe in a bit of everything! Magic is in the everyday, watching our kids grow is magical and I love how, despite what I teach them, they can still create their own magical worlds with no help from grown ups! Think my husband and I are just big kids because we love magic in every shape and form! Great post x

Yes I DO believe in magic. I agree with Jules, it’s just plain magical to see my kiddo grow. I also believe in luck and diligence. Sometimes we need a bit of everything to make life easy!

As for religion, I grew up in a Buddhist family but my mom let me read the bible (and i went to a catholic school). I ended up choosing to be a Buddhist when I was 18. I think a choice is really what my mom gave me. And now I’m doing the same with my kiddo.

Awesome article! I’m really glad to hear that you’re giving your kids a choice and letting them decide what to believe in by encouraging their open minds. I was talking to my girlfriend the other day about this, and I was glad to know that we were both on the same page; if we have kids, we won’t raise them as members of any particular faith. We believe that they should have the right to believe in what they see fit, and that if we push them into a particular faith and make promises on their behalf when they are too young to even speak, we may be doing them more harm then good.
Magic is an intriguing concept. Those who love magic are often intrigued because it challenges the “impossible.” I love this idea and love watching magicians’ illusions. I’m not sure I believe in magic in the sense of fairies and spirits but my girlfriend sure does. Raising our future kids to be open minded in a world dominated by organized religion seems as though it will pose some challenges, but if our kids grow up to believe what they feel makes sense to them rather than what their parents’ have drilled into their heads for years and years, then facing the challenges will all be worth it.
    Thanks for listening :)
